Moldova: election outcome will test viability of Europe’s eastern expansion

Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe, has reached a turning point in its history. The tiny country of 3.5 million people sees some half its population supporting a move towards Europe with the rest wanting the shelter of Russia. A weak minority government now faces the task of overcoming infighting and corruption as it tries to lead the country towards economic and social reform to join Europe – while battling pressures from Russia.
